2020 - Rakuten Edy iOS Application

Charging, Receiving, and Checking your balance from your own smartphone

Overview

With the current Rakuten Edy app that is available only for Android, we want to fulfill iOS users' requests by providing the service to the iOS user. Users can conveniently check and top up their balance as well as manage their Edy cards easily. With the release of the iOS13 which supports Felica user can easily link their plastic Edy card to their phone simply by just tapping.

I was the main designer working on this new application in 2019 with a team consisting of project managers, business units, and lead engineers.

My Role.

Team

I worked with the team consisting of a product manager and engineer lead, as well as the Rakuten Design governance team to make sure the new product is unique to Edy yet still aligns with the Rakuten core experience.

User Research

I worked with the team to construct the user test session to check the usability and validate the design. The test was conducted internally among Rakuten staff who were not participle in product development, so we could speed up the process of user testing and take the comment to improve on the product.

Design

it was an amazing opportunity to be able to kick off from scratch by deciding which feature should we focus on as a priority working with multiple teams to decide on the visual.

The Problem

Up until before the release of this app, iOS users have to either top up their Edy from their convenience store or they have to find a special kiosk to top up their balance. And there is no easy method for them to find out how much credit they have left. Which is rather inconvenient, especially for user who does not live in the city. We want to make that process easier that is why we created this application.

  • “I live very far from a convenience store so I cannot Top Up My card easily, also it is troublesome to go all the way there to top up Edy”

  • “There’s no way I can know how much balance I have in my cards, it’s embarrassing to be told the my balance is insufficient”

  • “I want to be able to see the breakdown of my Edy usage easily without having to go thru all the hussle of logging in.

Goal.

Easy to get started

The onboarding process should be easy and simple. For Edy, we have a lot of users who are not tech-savvy. I wanted to make sure that the process should be as simple as tap and go.

Clear Visibility

The design should be gentle and friendly to all users I made sure that the design has high contrast with good visibility. The information which is important to user are displayed in large font size and

Provide Convenience

Users should be able to top up their Edy easily, Especially Edy users who are living in the province and have difficulty finding a convenient store to top up.

How it works.

Linking cards made easy

With the new release of iOS13 users can easily tap the card onto their devices to register the card detail to the app.  if the user chooses to log in with their Rakuten account this will also automatically link their plastic card detail to their Rakuten account. We had some difficulty because some users did not know where to tap the card. I added animation on the onboarding process to guide them to the location of the card reader.

User can check their balance and usage history easily

Users can link up to 5 Edy cards with this application after linking users can see the balance of each card on the home screen, as well as check the breakdown of their monthly expenses from the usage history menu.

Users can easily top up from their credit card

Edy iOS user can top up their balance directly from their credit cards. The credit card can be registered from this app or if they had linked their Rakuten account their payment method will show up here automatically. Once the user tops up their card, they will get a toast to let them know that the transaction is completed.

Summary

Sadly I left the company right after the release date of the application. However, the app was very well received, on the first week of release the app was ranked #4 in Japan App Store for Financial service with very positive reviews.

If I were to have a chance to work on this project again I would like to push to make the payment via this app come true. We couldn't do it due to some technical difficulty back then but the exciting part about working in this industry is making the impossible. I really enjoyed working on this project.
